The Zamfara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed deep concern over what it described as moves by the state government to deploy the dreaded, outlawed Yan Sakai vigilante group to Kaura Namoda Local Government Area ahead of Saturday’s State House of Assembly bye-election.
In a statement signed by the APC Publicity Secretary in Zamfara State, Yusuf Idris Gusau, the party alleged that members of the outlawed group had been sighted entering the Government House. Information obtained, the statement said, revealed that they were being provided with uniforms and firearms similar to those used by members of the state government’s security watch group.
“This is an alarming development being orchestrated by the PDP and the state government in a desperate attempt to forcefully ensure that their candidate is declared winner at the end of the election, regardless of who gets wounded or killed,” the statement read.
The APC recalled that the state government and the PDP had earlier sought to postpone the election on grounds of insecurity—an idea the APC rejected.
“Both the state government and the PDP are clearly uncomfortable with the APC’s strength, and with this current move of bringing in outlawed thugs, we fear for the lives and property of our electorate and party members, particularly in the affected local government,” Gusau said.
The party called on all security agencies in the state to act promptly, stressing that only recognised and reputable agencies—particularly the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC)—should be involved in the election security arrangements.
