Rt. Hon. Kwamoti Bitrus Laori, Member of the House of Representatives and National President of the Planned Parenthood Federation of Nigeria (PPFN), has called for urgent, united action between Local Government Areas (LGAs) and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) to strengthen Nigeria’s population health programs.
Delivering the lead paper at a seminar organized by the Ekiti State Bureau of Statistics, Laori spoke on “Fostering a Closer Relationship Between LGAs and NGOs in Population Program Implementation in Nigeria.” With Nigeria’s population now exceeding 220 million, he stressed that collaborative strategies are critical to advancing reproductive health, family planning, gender equity, and youth empowerment.
Citing PPFN’s successful partnerships in Kaduna, Cross River, and Ogun States—where joint outreach, capacity building, and community engagement have improved health outcomes and reduced teenage pregnancies—Laori urged for institutionalized partnerships, joint planning frameworks, shared data systems, and stronger community advocacy.
“The future of Nigeria’s population health depends on our ability to collaborate, innovate, and lead together,” he declared, appealing to traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups, women’s organizations, and development partners to work closely with LGAs.
The seminar was opened by the Ekiti State Governor, represented by Deputy Governor Chief (Mrs) Monisade Christianah Afuye, and attended by members of the State Executive Council, the State Statistician General, LGA chairmen, traditional rulers, religious leaders, NGOs, and other population stakeholders.
