The traditional institution in Bauchi state would now be richer with additional 13 new emirates and 2 chiefdoms if the recommendation of the committee charged with this responsibility gets the blessing of the State House of Assembly.

The development followed the submission of the report of a committee charged with the responsibility of creating additional emirates and district areas in the state to Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed.

The committee chairman, Alh. Hamza Koshe Akuyam told the governor that they received a total of 196 memoranda, 17 for the creation of Emirates, 166 for Districts, and others for Chiefdoms.

Koshe recalled that his committee was inaugurated on July 4, 2025 with the mandate to review requests from communities across the state, assess their historical, cultural and administrative justifications, and make recommendations to promote justice, inclusiveness and peaceful coexistence.

Hamza Koshe explained that at the end of the committee work that took almost ten weeks, it recommended to the government the creation of 13 additional Emirates, 2 Chiefdoms, and 111 Districts across Bauchi State.

Receiving the report of the committee on Friday, Governor Bala Mohammed commended it for what he described as a transparent and painstaking exercise, and praised the methodology, models, and templates used in carrying out the assigned responsibility.

Senator Bala Mohammed explained that the reform in the traditional institution was in line with his administration’s commitment to unbundle Bauchi state for easier governance, eliminate ungoverned spaces, and give communities a sense of self-actualization.

The Governor acknowledged the pains the exercise may have caused some monarchs in the state, saying however that similar practices had taken place across Nigeria and even beyond Africa.

He assured traditional rulers and communities that government would implement the recommendations fairly, balancing the aspirations of new communities with the dignity of existing institutions, while expanding opportunities for leadership and representation at the various levels.

Recall that Bauchi state Governor Bala Mohammed on July 4, inaugurated a of the over 40-member Committee saddled with the responsibility for review and assess all Memoranda requests received from various communities seeking the creation of new Emirates, Chiefdoms and Districts in the state. 

The governor said that the creation of new traditional institutions in the state was in fullfilment of his electioneering campaign promises dates back to 2019 when he aspired for the Bauchi plum seat.

To this end, the governor explained, his administration has found it expedient and timely to revisit the issue to address the long standing demands and appeals by historical legitimacy, social equity and graps for consensus.

He said that the government's intention is not only in fullfilment of the political promises made, but also to deepen local governance, enhance identity, and strengthen the invaluable roles of traditional institutions, for people matters as custodians of peace, unity and development.

Senator Bala Mohammed further explained that it is in consonance with the established practice in the country in various states where the traditional institutions have been unbundled and provided data and statistics for development, and distribution of take away from the federation account in terms of number of emirates, districts and villages.

Governor Bala expressed regret that Bauchi has remained dormant in this regard since the creation of the state in 1976, stressing that traditional institutions serves as pillars of communal cohesion and catalyst for progress, hence the expansion of such institutions through administrative units to consolidate building efforts, and poster inclusivity and empower communities to participate meaningly in governance.

Governor Bala added, "The rationale for the creation of new emirates, Chiefdoms and districts is grounded for consideration in the need for promotion of peace and progress, stability and development, their roles to serve as catalyst for mobilisation towards communal and social development programmes, and postering social cohesion, among others."
