The Zamfara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has condemned what it described as the arbitrary and deliberate dismissal of civil servants by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) administration led by Governor Dauda Lawal.
In a statement signed by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Yusuf Idris Gusau, the APC expressed dismay over the recent disengagement of more than 3,000 civil servants who had earlier undergone a state verification exercise and were cleared without any issues.
According to the statement, the affected workers — many of whom have served for between 10 and 20 years and have large families depending on them — were reportedly targeted for being sympathetic to opposition political parties. The APC alleged that the workers have been left without salaries for about 10 months, plunging them into poverty and hardship.
“Many of these people, who are not the only victims of the present administration, have resorted to seeking divine intervention. They gathered at the Gusau Eid Prayer Ground, offering prayers and reciting verses from the Holy Qur’an,” the statement said.
The APC compared the current administration’s actions with the tenure of the immediate past governor and current Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, who, it said, created jobs despite limited resources.
“During the APC administration under Matawalle, the government employed 1,400 persons awaiting regularisation, over 9,000 political appointees and civil servants, 336 teachers, and 200 nurses and midwives — all with a monthly federal allocation of only about N3 billion. That government was determined to boost social security,” the statement noted.
The party criticised the current PDP-led government, alleging that despite receiving between N19 billion and N30 billion in monthly federal allocations and an additional N2 billion in internally generated revenue, it prioritises luxury over public welfare.
“The government of Dauda Lawal uses state resources to live extravagantly with family and friends while sacking workers in the name of saving costs,” the statement alleged.
The APC called on Governor Lawal to immediately reinstate the affected workers, warning that the mass sackings could worsen the state’s already fragile security situation.
“We urge the state government, especially the governor, to reinstate the victimised civil servants in the interest of justice and peace. These citizens also have equal rights to the state’s resources,” the statement concluded.
