The Wife of the Zamfara State Governor, Hajiya Huriyya Lawal, has facilitated the release of 436 inmates by settling their debts to secure their freedom from various correctional centres across the state.
Hajiya Huriyya disclosed this on Monday during a mass wedding ceremony for 200 orphans held in Gusau. She explained that the beneficiaries were convicted over debt-related matters from 54 Sharia Courts across Zamfara State.
She added that the Zakkat and Endowment Board, in collaboration with the Sharia Court of Appeal, carefully reviewed and verified all cases to ensure only genuine beneficiaries were included in the intervention.
The governor’s wife urged the freed inmates to make the best use of the opportunity by rebuilding their lives positively and avoiding actions that could lead to another loss of freedom. She also advised the 200 newlywed couples to build their homes on love, patience and adherence to the teachings of Islamic Sharia.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Zakkat and Endowment Board, Mallam Umar Kanoma, appealed to politicians and philanthropists to support the board’s activities. He noted that the board is non-political and was established to address the needs of vulnerable groups within the state.
Kanoma commended the state government for its unwavering support to the board and its interventions aimed at improving the wellbeing of the less privileged.
