The Bauchi State Government on Thursday announced the passing of one of Nigeria’s most respected Islamic scholars, Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, who died in the early hours of the day at the age of 102.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued from the Government House, Bauchi, and signed by Mukhtar Gidado, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Governor Bala Mohammed.
According to the statement, Governor Mohammed expressed deep grief over the death of the revered scholar, describing it as a profound loss not only to Bauchi State but to the entire Muslim Ummah in Nigeria and beyond.
The governor extended condolences to the late Sheikh’s family, his thousands of students, followers, and admirers across the world.
“Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi was a towering figure in Islamic scholarship, a man of deep faith, humility, and wisdom,” the statement quoted the governor as saying. “His lifetime was devoted to the propagation of Islam, the teaching of the Holy Qur’an, and the moral and spiritual upliftment of humanity.”
The cleric, widely considered one of Africa’s foremost scholars of Qur’anic education, established dozens of schools and learning centres that produced generations of Qur’an memorizers and Islamic scholars.
The government noted that his contributions to theology, jurisprudence, and Islamic history have left an enduring imprint on Nigeria’s religious and intellectual landscape. He was also remembered as a strong voice for peace, tolerance, and unity.
The statement said the Bauchi State Government will continue to honour his legacy by supporting the institutions he founded and promoting the values he stood for, including moral discipline, Islamic education, and community development.
Governor Mohammed prayed for Allah’s forgiveness upon the deceased and for Aljannatul Firdaus to be granted to him, while urging his family and followers to find strength in the exemplary life he lived.
Funeral arrangements were yet to be officially made public as at the time of filing this report.
