The Jigawa State Government has conferred the Digital Security Advocate Award on Comrade Ismaila Ibrahim Dutse, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Jigawa State Council. The recognition was presented during the closing ceremony of the Digital Security Ambassadors Workshop, which trained 120 youths from across the state.
The workshop, held as part of activities marking the Cybersecurity Awareness Month, featured online sessions, public lectures, and a two-day cybersecurity bootcamp. Participants were trained on key areas including digital hygiene, data protection, and safe social media practices.
Presenting the award, the Director General of Jigawa ICT and Digital Economy, Dr. Muhammad Hassan, commended Comrade Dutse for his efforts in promoting digital safety awareness and fostering a culture of responsible information sharing across the state. He stressed the importance of cybersecurity, noting that “cybersecurity is foundational to every aspect of governance, business, and daily life.” He urged participants to apply their knowledge in their respective communities.
The newly inaugurated Digital Security Ambassadors are expected to drive grassroots digital safety initiatives in line with the Greater Jigawa Agenda, which envisions a secure and digitally empowered society.
The Special Assistant to the Governor on ICT and Digital Economy, Hon. Murtala Lawan Kazaure, highlighted the active role played by the NUJ Chairman in the success of the Cybersecurity Awareness Month programs. He said, “Today marks a proud moment for Jigawa State as we celebrate a milestone in our journey towards a digitally secure, responsible, and empowered society.”
He further outlined the achievements of the program, which included online awareness campaigns, radio and TV programs, a Hausa cybersecurity documentary, public lectures for journalists, and workshops for civil servants.
In his acceptance speech, Comrade Dutse expressed appreciation to the government for the honour, describing it as a collective recognition of all journalists in Jigawa State. “This award is not just for me but for every dedicated journalist working to empower citizens with critical knowledge that promotes responsible information sharing,” he said.
Other personalities honoured at the event include Dr. Muhammad Hassan, Barrister Abubakar Idris Gagarawa (Chairman, Gagarawa Local Government Council), Malam Bashir Abba, and Malam Sadiq Muhammad, a Jigawa Digital Security Ambassador. The awards underscored the growing need to strengthen digital literacy and equip communities to combat cybercrime effectively.
