The Delta State Police Command has refuted claims circulating on social media alleging that bandits attacked Girls’ Secondary School, Utagba-Ogbe in Kwale, Delta State. The rumours, which spread rapidly online on Monday, triggered panic among parents who rushed to retrieve their children from school.
Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Abaniwonda, described the report as “entirely false and misleading,” insisting that no security breach occurred. He explained that the scare began with misinformation among students, which was later amplified by unverified social media posts suggesting community tension and alleged gunshots.
Upon receiving the report, the Commissioner said he immediately deployed police operatives to the school. The Vice Principal and security personnel on duty confirmed to the team that there was no attack and that the panic was caused solely by student misinformation.
As part of precautionary measures, the Command also dispatched officers to other schools within the Kwale area to assess the situation. Abaniwonda noted that all the schools visited were calm and fully engaged in regular academic activities.
He assured parents and residents that normalcy had been restored, urging the public to avoid spreading unverified information capable of inciting fear or disrupting school operations.
