Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has announced plans to establish a strategic partnership with Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, in key areas including education, agriculture, and capacity development.
Governor Lawal made this known when he received the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adamu Ahmed, and his management team during a courtesy visit to the Zamfara Government House in Gusau.
The governor, who is himself an alumnus of ABU, said his administration was eager to leverage the institution’s academic and research strength to drive human capital development and agricultural transformation in the state.
“Education is not only the responsibility of government but of every citizen,” Lawal said, reflecting on his fond memories as an undergraduate in Zaria. “ABU remains one of the best universities in the world — I make no apology for saying that, because the quality of education I received there shaped who I am today.”
He described partnership with ABU as a priority for his administration, especially given the university’s pool of qualified teaching and non-teaching staff. Lawal expressed appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor for releasing some ABU professionals to serve in his government, noting that their contributions were helping to reposition the state’s public sector.
On agriculture, the governor said Zamfara would soon commence mechanized farming, with technical collaboration from ABU’s research institutes to boost food production and improve rural livelihoods. He also highlighted the importance of capacity building for civil servants, adding that collaboration with ABU would help strengthen institutional knowledge and enhance governance.
“The partnership will help our civil servants understand their roles better,” he noted. “This is why we even engaged consultants during the process of appointing permanent secretaries — to ensure competence and merit.”
Governor Lawal thanked Prof. Ahmed and his team for the visit and reaffirmed his administration’s readiness to deepen cooperation with the university for the overall development of Zamfara State.
The Vice-Chancellor’s delegation included the Registrar, Rabiu Samaila; Prof. Ado Yusuf, Director of the Institute for Agricultural Research; Prof. Rabiu Hassan, Director of the National Animal Production Research Institute; and Prof. Sani Yusuf Ahmad, Director of the National Agricultural Extension and Research Liaison Services.
Other members of the team were Prof. M. I. Umar-Buratai, Director, Directorate of Advancement and International Education; Prof. M. K. Isah, Dean, Faculty of Administration; Prof. Rahanatu Lawal, Coordinator, Gender Policy Unit; and Prof. Ashiru Bello of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, among others.
