Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has inaugurated a newly constructed 48-classroom High Islamic College in Gubio Local Government Area of northern Borno State.
The state-of-the-art institution offers a hybrid curriculum that integrates Western education with the traditional sangaya (Qur’anic) education system.
The college is designed to produce graduates who are firmly grounded in Islamic scholarship while being adequately equipped to pursue higher education in conventional institutions.
Governor Zulum underscored the need to revitalise the sangaya system by preserving its rich tradition of Islamic learning while incorporating modern academic subjects and vocational skills.
“Our focus has been on revitalising the system by preserving its rich tradition of Islamic scholarship while introducing modern subjects and vocational skills,” Zulum said.
He noted that the sangaya education system has historically played a vital role in shaping moral values, discipline, and learning within communities across the state.
The facility comprises administrative blocks and a library and is expected to cater to hundreds of students from Gubio and neighbouring communities.
During the visit, the governor also commissioned the Gubio II Junior Day Secondary School, constructed by the Borno State Government.
In addition, Zulum inaugurated three projects executed by the Gubio Local Government Council under its chairman, Mali Bulama Mali Gubio. The projects include the Gubio Oil Mills, the Zulum Ultramodern Clinic, and the Mustapha Gubio Shopping Complex.
The commissioning ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai Elkanemi, and Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno, among others.
