A high-powered delegation of livestock experts, led by the Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Mukhtar Idi Maiha, on Friday paid a working visit to the Nigerian Institute of Leather and Science Technology (NILEST), Zaria, as part of efforts to strengthen collaboration in the livestock and leather sectors.
The delegation also included the Special Adviser to the President on Livestock Development, Professor Attahiru Jega, and was received by the Director-General of NILEST, Dr. Auwal Mustapha Imam.
Earlier, Dr. Imam joined the Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Professor Adamu Ahmed, to receive the team at the Vice-Chancellor’s office. From there, the delegation proceeded to the National Animal Production Research Institute (NAPRI), Shika, where facilities and equipment supplied under the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) project were commissioned.
At NAPRI, the team undertook an extensive tour of facilities across the institute, inspecting animal units and feed systems, while assessing the impact of the L-PRES intervention on livestock productivity.
The delegation later moved to NILEST, where they were formally received by the institute’s management. During the visit, the team toured the tannery and other key departments, inspecting equipment and infrastructure aimed at boosting leather processing and value addition.
Speaking separately during the visit, the Minister of Livestock Development and the Director-General of NILEST underscored the importance of strategic collaboration between relevant institutions for the sustainable development of Nigeria’s livestock and leather industries.
Dr. Imam reiterated NILEST’s commitment to partnering with the Ministry of Livestock Development to achieve the objectives of the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in enhancing productivity, resilience, and industrial growth within the sector.
The visit is seen as part of ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to reposition the livestock and leather value chains as key contributors to national economic development.
