The Niger State Government has flagged off the construction of 54 Level II Primary Health Care Centres (PHCs) across the state in a move aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery at the grassroots.
The project, being implemented under the World Bank-supported IMPACT Project in conjunction with the Niger State Government, was formally launched at Landzun Ward in Bida Local Government Area. The ceremony marked another milestone in the healthcare reforms of Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago’s administration.
Representing the governor at the event, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Murtala Bagana, officially handed over project sites to contractors, signalling the commencement of work.
Also in attendance were the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Abdullahi Usman Iman; the State IMPACT Project Manager, Pharmacist Tijjani Hamza; and the Executive Chairman of Bida Local Government Council alongside members of his team.
Development partners present included representatives of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), UNICEF, the World Health Organization (WHO), New Incentives, and the Chigari Foundation. Traditional rulers and community stakeholders also attended the ceremony, demonstrating broad-based support for the initiative.
The large turnout underscored growing collaboration between the state government, development partners and local communities in efforts to improve healthcare infrastructure and service delivery.
Upon completion, the new facilities are expected to expand access to essential health services, enhance maternal and child healthcare, and provide quality medical services closer to residents, particularly in underserved communities.
The initiative further reflects the state government’s commitment to building a more resilient healthcare system and improving the wellbeing of its citizens.
