The Niger State Government has expressed its readiness to collaborate with the Nigeria Union of Mine Workers (NUMW) in the extraction and management of mining activities across the 25 local government areas of the state.

This was contained in a letter issued by the Niger State Ministry of Mineral Resources to the union and signed by the ministry’s secretary, Comrade Idris A. Legbo.

According to the letter, the ministry sought the approval and cooperation of the union toward the implementation of a joint mining project involving artisanal miners across the state.

The document explained that the proposed arrangement is aimed at ensuring a structured and mutually beneficial system for the extraction and distribution of mineral resources in Niger State.

Under the proposed sharing formula, the state government, the union, and artisanal miners are expected to jointly benefit from proceeds generated through mining activities.

The arrangement also emphasised the need for all parties involved to work together in order to maximise the benefits of the state’s mineral resources and ensure fair distribution of profits based on agreed terms.

Speaking on the development, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Mine Workers in Niger State, Comrade Musa Adamu Nasko, described the initiative as a positive step that would enhance mining activities, create employment opportunities, and improve the welfare and protection of mining workers across the state.

Nasko explained that only miners registered under the NUMW would benefit from the arrangement, noting that the union is affiliated with the Nigeria Labour Congress and enjoys a strong working relationship with the state government.
He therefore urged miners operating in the state to register with the union in order to participate in the new system.

According to him, all mining activities under the arrangement would be conducted in accordance with the laws regulating mining operations in Nigeria.
