I wish to use this medium to make an urgent and special appeal to the Katsina State Government, the Commissioner of Police, and parents to take immediate action regarding the growing issue of youths playing football on narrow residential streets at night during the month of Ramadan.
Prompt intervention is necessary to prevent the situation from escalating into a serious threat to residents in affected neighborhoods across Katsina metropolis.
Although it has become a yearly practice for young people to use small streets for relaxation and night football during Ramadan, this year’s situation appears more tense. This follows a recent announcement by the Chairman of the Hisba Board stating that the board has banned football during the fasting period and will take appropriate action against anyone found violating the directive.
The announcement has generated widespread controversy on social media, particularly on TikTok, where many individuals openly criticized the decision. Some users even expressed intentions to confront, insult, or resist Hisba officials should they attempt to enforce the ban through patrols and arrests.
In an attempt to clarify the situation, a Hisba officer popularly known as “Dan Hisba” addressed the issue on TikTok, explaining the ban on football and other regulations relating to the Ramadan period. However, our correspondent monitored public reactions in the comment sections and observed that many youths declared their readiness to defy the order and confront officials.
Last night, we visited several neighborhoods to assess the situation firsthand, especially in areas reportedly affected. We observed that many youths had gathered with a strong determination to continue playing football despite the directive. There were also alarming statements suggesting possible violent resistance against anyone attempting to stop them.
If not properly managed, this situation could result in clashes between residents, the youths involved, and Hisba officials — potentially leading to serious unrest.
Street football in residential areas poses multiple risks. Residents are disturbed by excessive noise at night; shop owners and business operators are affected; and motorists face hazards, including the possibility of tire damage due to stones used as goalposts. In some cases, property damage may also occur.
Affected areas reportedly include: New Neighborhood Road; Abbatuwa to Rahamawa; New Darma Road; Madawaki Unguwar Road; Sullubawa Road; Saulawa Road; Alkali District Road; and Mangal Mosque Road to Rahamawa, among others.
Given the rising tension and potential security implications, I strongly urge the relevant authorities and community leaders to intervene swiftly and responsibly. Parents should also caution their children against actions that may endanger lives or disrupt public peace during this sacred month.
Preventive dialogue, community engagement, and lawful enforcement are necessary to maintain peace and harmony in Katsina State during Ramadan.
