The Senate has approved a reduction in the statutory period for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to publish a notice of election, cutting it from 360 days to 180 days.

The decision followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by Senator Tahir Monguno, who argued that the existing 360-day requirement was no longer practicable in view of the timeline for the next general election.

Monguno explained that retaining the earlier timeframe would leave INEC constrained, noting that the commission was already behind schedule if the 360-day provision was applied.

With the amendment, INEC now has greater flexibility and sufficient time to publish the notice of election ahead of the 2027 general elections.
