‘INEC Has Caved to Pressure’ — ADC Accuses Tinubu Govt of Plotting One-Party State

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has launched a scathing attack on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), accusing it of bowing to political pressure and siding with the Federal Government in the ongoing leadership crisis within the party.

In a statement issued on Wenesday and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the opposition party rejected INEC’s interpretation of the recent Court of Appeal ruling, describing it as “contradictory” and inconsistent with both facts and reason.

The party alleged that the electoral body’s موقف was influenced by a “jittery government” threatened by what it described as ADC’s growing political momentum ahead of future elections.

“We reject INEC’s interpretation of the Court of Appeal ruling. We knew that INEC was being pressured by a government that has become jittery from the ADC’s rising momentum,” the statement read.

ADC further accused the government of attempting to weaken opposition parties and impose a one-party system in the country, warning that such actions pose a threat to Nigeria’s democracy.

“What is clear, however, is that INEC has caved to pressure and has chosen to side with the government against the Nigerian people,” the party stated.

The party said it is currently reviewing its legal and political options and would soon announce its next line of action in response to the electoral body’s position.

It also called on its members and supporters nationwide to remain calm and resolute as the situation unfolds.

The latest development comes amid escalating tensions within the ADC over its leadership, with rival factions laying claim to the party’s national structure following a Court of Appeal ruling that ordered parties to maintain the status quo pending the determination of a substantive suit before the Federal High Court in Abuja.

INEC had, in its response, announced it would suspend recognition of all factions and remove the names of the current National Working Committee from its portal, pending the court’s final decision.

The ADC, however, insists the Commission’s action is flawed and politically motivated, setting the stage for a prolonged legal and political showdown.
