Suspected terrorists on Monday launched an early morning attack on a Nigerian Army base in Kemanji community, Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, killing three soldiers during a fierce gun battle.

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Monday evening, expressing condolences to the families of the fallen troops.

According to the governor, the attack occurred at about 3:00 a.m., when armed assailants stormed the military position but were met with stiff resistance from the soldiers.

“Our gallant troops successfully repelled the terrorists and prevented them from gaining access to the community. Many of the attackers were neutralised,” he stated.

He added that the soldiers also thwarted an apparent plan by the attackers to carry out kidnappings in the area.

“In the course of defending the base and protecting civilians, we lost three courageous soldiers. They paid the supreme price in service to the nation,” the governor said.

AbdulRazaq assured that the state government would continue to support the bereaved families and reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property.

Renewed Security Concerns

The Kwara attack comes amid a string of recent assaults on military formations across the country.

Days earlier, a Nigerian Army colonel and six soldiers were killed during a terrorist attack on a military base in Monguno, Borno State. The troops were reportedly responding to an overnight assault when they were ambushed.

In a statement, Sani Uba, spokesperson for the North-East Joint Task Force, said insurgents attacked troops at the Charlie 13 location on Sunday night.

Similarly, on April 8, a brigadier-general, Oseni Braimah, and three other soldiers were killed in a coordinated terrorist attack in Benisheikh, Borno State.

The Defence Headquarters, through its Director of Defence Media Operations, Michael Onoja, confirmed the incident, noting that the attack occurred in the early hours of the day.

The spate of attacks has heightened concerns over the security situation, particularly in northern Nigeria, despite ongoing military operations against insurgent groups.
