Tinubu Approves N15bn Grant for New Police Academy Campus in Ogun

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of a new campus of the Nigeria Police Academy in Erinja, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State, alongside a take-off grant of N15 billion.

The approval was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.

According to the statement, the decision aligns with provisions of the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021, which provides for the expansion of the institution beyond its current base in Wudil, Kano State, into multiple campuses nationwide.

Onanuga explained that the N15 billion take-off fund will be sourced from the 2026 allocation of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), and will be used to finance critical infrastructure, academic facilities, student accommodation, and essential training equipment.

He further noted that the choice of Erinja as the host community followed recommendations from a high-level consultative meeting involving key stakeholders, including the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa; the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu; and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Abdullahi Ribadu.

The meeting, according to the presidency, assessed factors such as student intake capacity, funding realities, academic quality assurance, and the long-term manpower needs of the Nigeria Police Force, particularly in light of ongoing recruitment efforts.

“President Tinubu believes the expansion will strengthen institutional governance, modern policing education, and national security,” the statement added.

Push for Increased Police Recruitment

The development comes amid a broader federal government plan to scale up police recruitment nationwide.

On December 9, 2024, the Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Gaidam, disclosed that the president had approved the recruitment of 30,000 police officers annually over the next five to six years.

Gaidam made the announcement during a visit to the Police Academy in Wudil, Kano State, where he reiterated the government’s commitment to transparent recruitment processes and strengthening security across the country.

He noted that the previous annual recruitment figure of 10,000 officers was insufficient to meet Nigeria’s growing security demands, stressing that the increased intake is aimed at addressing manpower shortages and improving nationwide security coverage.

The establishment of additional training infrastructure, including the new Ogun campus, is expected to support the expanded recruitment drive and enhance the operational capacity of the Nigeria Police Force.
