The transformation of Niger State's infrastructure gained further momentum as Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago officially flagged off the reconstruction of the 5.43-kilometre Kontagora Township Dual Carriageway, stretching from Barracks Junction to Makera Junction along Yauri Road.
The project, which forms part of the Governor's ambitious New Niger Agenda, is expected to significantly improve transportation, stimulate commerce, and reinforce Kontagora's position as a strategic economic hub in Niger North.
Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Bago described the reconstruction as another defining milestone in his administration's urban renewal programme, emphasizing his commitment to overhauling critical infrastructure across the state.
He noted that Kontagora occupies a strategic position in the economic and social landscape of Niger State, serving as a major commercial and agricultural centre, as well as a gateway connecting several communities. According to him, modernising the township road will unlock greater economic opportunities for farmers, traders, transporters, businesses, and residents.
The Governor observed that the road had deteriorated considerably over the years due to increasing traffic volume, inadequate drainage systems, and ageing infrastructure, making its reconstruction both timely and necessary.
He explained that the project complements other major infrastructure initiatives already underway in the area, including the 8.7-kilometre expansion of the Kontagora Bypass, which has reached about 85 per cent completion, and the 19.4-kilometre Kontagora Western Bypass, where land acquisition has been completed and substantial progress recorded.
Governor Bago reiterated that his administration's vision goes beyond constructing roads, stressing that the government is building durable infrastructure capable of serving future generations while attracting industries, creating employment opportunities, stimulating economic activities, and improving the quality of life of the people.
Earlier, the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Abubakar Usman, described the project as a catalyst for economic growth and improved mobility. He said the dual carriageway would enhance road safety, facilitate the movement of people and goods, and boost commercial activities across Kontagora and neighbouring communities.
He appealed to residents to cooperate with the contractors throughout the construction period to ensure the timely completion of the project.
In separate goodwill messages, the Member representing Kontagora/Mariga/Wushishi/Mashegu Federal Constituency, Hon. Abdullahi Idris Garba; the APC North-Central Zonal Vice Chairman, Muazu Bawa Rijau; and the Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abdulmalik Sarkin Daji, commended Governor Bago for extending massive infrastructural development to Kontagora.
They described the road reconstruction as a long-awaited intervention that would ease transportation, promote economic activities, and improve the overall living conditions of residents.
Also speaking, the APC State Chairman, Aminu Bobi, and the Chairman of Kontagora Local Government Council, Barrister Lawal Yusuf, expressed appreciation to the Governor for responding to one of the community's most pressing infrastructural needs. They noted that the deplorable state of the road had posed serious challenges to motorists, traders, and residents for many years.
Providing technical details of the project, the Lead Consultant, Engineer Aliyu Abdulrauf, explained that the 5.43-kilometre dual carriageway would feature modern drainage systems, pedestrian walkways, and other supporting infrastructure designed to ensure durability, safety, and improved traffic flow.
On behalf of the construction company, Mr. Li Xiaowen assured the state government and the people of Kontagora of the firm's commitment to delivering a high-quality project within the stipulated timeframe. He pledged the company's continued collaboration with the government to ensure the successful execution of the project.
The groundbreaking ceremony marks another milestone in Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago's ongoing efforts to modernise Niger State's infrastructure through strategic investments aimed at promoting sustainable development, expanding economic opportunities, and improving the well-being of citizens under the New Niger Agenda.
