The Federal High Court sitting in Gusau, Zamfara State, has adjourned to 28 July 2026 the suit filed by an All Progressives Congress (APC) Zamfara North Senatorial aspirant, Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi, challenging the conduct of the party's senatorial primary election.
The suit, which names the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the All Progressives Congress (APC), and Senator Sahabi Ya'u Kaura as defendants, seeks to challenge the validity of the primary election that produced Senator Kaura as the party's candidate.
When the matter came up for mention before the presiding judge, Justice Hassan Dikko, the court observed that two of the defendants—the APC and INEC—were absent because they had not been properly served with the court processes.
Consequently, Justice Dikko adjourned the matter to 28 July 2026 for further mention. The court also directed that all the defendants be duly served and granted them time to file their responses before the next hearing.
Speaking with journalists after the proceedings, counsel to the third defendant, Senator Kaura, Barrister J.C. Shaka, disclosed that he had already filed a motion urging the court to dismiss the suit. He argued that no valid APC senatorial primary election was conducted in Zamfara North that produced his client as the winner.
On his part, counsel to the plaintiff, Barrister Bello Galadi, confirmed that the matter came up for mention and expressed confidence that justice would prevail once all parties appear before the court.
"We reiterate our demand for justice over the purported senatorial primary election that produced the third defendant as the winner. The exercise was marred by irregularities arising from non-compliance with the guidelines governing the conduct of the primary election," Galadi said.
