The Federal Government has introduced new policies aimed at ensuring safety in the mining sector and securing investments.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu disclosed this at the Government House in Minna during a condolence visit to the Niger State Government, following the recent collapse of a mining site in the Shiroro Local Government Area.

The President, represented by the Minister of Solid Minerals, Dr. Dele Alake, described the incident as unfortunate and avoidable, underscoring the need for measures to prevent a recurrence, ensure safe operations, and secure investments.

According to the Minister, the new policies mandate that mining companies must have a concrete plan for local value-addition, a remediation plan, and an insurance policy for mine workers before their licenses are approved by the Ministry.

He commended the Governor of Niger State for his responsive and proactive measures in mobilizing the rescue mission.

The President also appreciated the security personnel, leaders, and community members for their efforts in rescuing some of the victims.

Extending his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, the affected community, and the Niger State government, the President assured that all efforts would be made to safely rescue those still trapped.

Responding, Former Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago described the visit as timely and applauded the Federal Government's new policies aimed at preventing future occurrences.

The former Governor also offered suggestions to the Federal Government for effective outcomes. His recommendations included grouping all licensed miners in the state into cooperatives, ensuring mining companies with licenses communicate and cooperate with relevant stakeholders, including host communities, local governments, emirates, and the state government.

Additionally, he recommended using technology in mining activities instead of sporadic use of explosives to prevent environmental hazards and conducting Environmental Impact Assessments before commencing mining activities.

The former Governor announced a N50 million donation from the President to the victims of the collapsed mining site, expressing gratitude for the gesture and promising that the funds would be delivered.

He also assured that the State Government is willing to collaborate with the Federal Government to achieve the desired objectives in the Solid Minerals sector.

The former Governor then accompanied the President to visit the injured victims receiving treatment at the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida Specialist Hospital in Minna.
