Kebbi State Governor, Comrade Dr. Nasir Idris, Kauran Gwandu, has donated ₦30 million to the widows of military personnel who lost their lives in active service.
The governor also announced additional donations, including ₦10 million to corps members and orphans of the 1 Battalion, Dukku Barracks, ₦15 million to the officers and men of the same battalion, and ₦15 million to the 223 Light Tank, Zuru Barracks.
Governor Idris made the announcements on Wednesday during a ceremony at the parade ground in Haliru Audu Stadium, Birnin Kebbi, in commemoration of Armed Forces Remembrance Day.
He described the event as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by the Nigerian Legion, whose members dedicated their lives to ensuring the freedom and peace enjoyed by all citizens.
"As we gather here today, we pay tribute to the gallant soldiers who have fought valiantly in defense of our sovereignty and the peace we enjoy today. Their courage, resilience, and unwavering commitment to duty inspire us all," the governor said.
Governor Idris emphasized the importance of reflecting on the values of sacrifice, service, and dedication exemplified by the armed forces.
"We remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, laying down their lives so that we may live in safety and security. To the families of these heroes, we extend our deepest condolences and gratitude. Rest assured, your loss is our loss, and we stand by you in solidarity," he said.
The governor urged all citizens to support the armed forces and advocate for their welfare, emphasizing the need to accord them the respect and care they deserve.
"In Kebbi State, we are committed to fostering a strong relationship with our military and security agencies. We recognize the vital role they play in maintaining peace and security in our communities," he stated.
Governor Idris called on attendees to honor the sacrifices of the armed forces by upholding the values they represent.
"Today, as we lay wreaths and observe a moment of silence, let us renew our commitment to uphold the ideals for which our armed forces stand. Let us work together to build a society that honors their sacrifices through actions that promote peace, tolerance, and understanding among all citizens," he concluded.
