The Kebbi State Governor, Comrade Dr. Nasir Idris, has laid the foundation for the newly established Federal College of Education (Technical) in Yauri, Yauri Local Government Area of the state.
Speaking at the foundation-laying ceremony on Saturday, the governor emphasized the importance of education in national development and the need for a skilled and knowledgeable youth population.
"It is a known fact that without quality and skill-based education for our teeming youths, no meaningful development can be achieved," he stated.
Governor Idris reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritizing education at all levels, from basic to tertiary, as a core responsibility of the government.
"We consider education one of our cardinal responsibilities, and this responsibility is a social debt. We owe this generation a duty, which is why we have made significant investments in education, and we will continue to do so," he affirmed.
To support the college’s take-off, the governor donated Government Day Secondary School, Tondi, as a temporary site for the institution. Additionally, he allocated 145 hectares of land behind the school for the college’s permanent site and funded the compensation for affected landowners.
"I wish to reassure the Governing Council and the Management of the College that my administration will continue to provide unwavering support for the institution’s development," he pledged.
Federal Government Commends Kebbi State’s Support
Representing the Minister of Education, Mr. Samuel Etu expressed gratitude to the Kebbi State Government for complementing the Federal Government’s efforts in advancing education. He highlighted that the institution would not only provide technical education but also equip youths with essential vocational skills.
The Chairman of the College's Governing Council, Rt. Hon. Isma’ila Ahmed Gadaka, also praised the governor’s contributions, expressing confidence that the institution would thrive under his support.
"Your Excellency, our beacon of hope lies in you. Our visit to you in January renewed our belief that this college will stand tall among its contemporaries," he remarked.
He further announced that the 400-seat lecture theatre would be named after Governor Nasir Idris, following the Federal Government’s directive for the college to commence academic activities by June 2025, alongside other newly established institutions.
Acting Provost Vows to Uphold Quality Education
In his welcome address, the Acting Provost of the College, Prof. Sa’ad Umar, expressed gratitude to Governor Idris, the Minister of Education Dr. Moruf Tunji Alausa, the Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Tanko Sununu, the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Sen. Atiku Bagudu, and the Emir of Yauri, Dr. Muhammad Zayyanu Abdullahi, for their roles in actualizing the project.
"Education is a powerful driver of development. Investing in education can significantly reduce poverty, improve health, promote gender equality, and enhance peace and stability."
He assured stakeholders that the institution would be committed to delivering quality education and training opportunities, playing a critical role in shaping the nation’s future.
