Governor Umar Namadi has emphasized that Northwestern Nigeria possesses the human and material resources needed to overcome its economic challenges and unlock its full potential.
He made this assertion while receiving the Board and Management of the Northwest Development Commission on a courtesy visit to the Government House in Dutse.
In his remarks, Governor Namadi commended the leadership of the newly established commission and pledged the support of Jigawa State and the Northwest Governors’ Forum to ensure its success. He stressed the importance of collaboration between the commission and state governments to drive meaningful development in the region.
“The Northwest region has the highest poverty rate in Nigeria, but this should not be the case. We have the resources—both human and material—to change this narrative. I urge you to have a clear vision, remain committed, and focus on setting key priorities. Our people deserve better, and with strategic planning and implementation, we can transform the region into an economic powerhouse,” he stated.
The governor advised the commission to adopt a strategic approach by identifying each state’s comparative advantages and aligning them with state development agendas. He emphasized the need to focus on sustainable infrastructure, education, security, and economic growth rather than short-term relief programs.
Governor Namadi also urged the commission to prioritize transparency, accountability, and integrity in its operations, assuring them of his administration’s full support.
“The people must see that you are genuinely working in their best interest. Once they have confidence in your commitment to development, they will support you. The Northwest cannot afford to lag behind—we must take bold steps to secure a prosperous future,” he added.
Chairman of the Board of the Northwest Development Commission, Lawal Sama’ila Abdullahi, acknowledged the critical role of the governors in the establishment of the commission and assured Governor Namadi of the commission’s commitment to working closely with state governments.
He noted that Jigawa State’s strong agricultural potential makes it a key partner in the commission’s efforts to boost agro-allied industries and infrastructure development across the region.
Abdullahi further stated that the commission would serve as an intervention agency to address key challenges in the Northwest, including security concerns, out-of-school children, drug addiction, and economic empowerment.
He called for Governor Namadi’s guidance and leadership in rallying support from other governors to ensure the commission’s success.
