The Niger State Government has announced the suspension of commercial motorcycle and tricycle operations from 6 PM to 6 AM within Minna, the state capital, as part of efforts to curb rising insecurity.
Governor Umaru Bago, also known as the Farmer Governor, made the announcement during a high-level security stakeholders’ meeting held at the Government House, attended by traditional title holders from the Minna Emirate and heads of security agencies.
Describing the directive as a temporary but necessary measure, Governor Bago emphasized that medical emergencies would be exempt from the restriction. He affirmed that the government cannot stand by while criminal elements continue to terrorize residents, stressing that safeguarding lives and property remains a top priority.
The Governor issued a stern warning to District, Village, and Ward Heads to ensure thorough documentation of individuals residing within their communities. He stated that any residence found harboring criminals would be demolished, and structures used for the sale of hard drugs would also face the same fate.
Calling on the state’s security apparatus to intensify efforts in clamping down on criminal elements, their hideouts, and networks, Governor Bago reiterated the government’s commitment to restoring peace and order.
He also urged parents to caution their children, warning that anyone involved in violent activities would be arrested and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. “The state government maintains a zero-tolerance policy on thuggery and social misconduct,” he stated.
Governor Bago concluded by emphasizing that governance is a shared responsibility and called on all stakeholders to unite in the fight against insecurity.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Governor Comrade Yakubu Garba, the Emir of Minna, Alhaji Umar Faruk Bahago, traditional leaders from Minna Emirate, and top security officials in the state.
