A group of women in Port Harcourt took to the streets on Monday in a show of support for the state of emergency recently declared in Rivers State.
Clad in white and carrying placards with messages such as “Prosecute the Bombers of Rivers Assembly” and “State of Emergency Is Constitutional,” the women expressed strong backing for the appointment of Ibok-Ete Ibas as the sole administrator of the state.
The demonstrators marched through key parts of Port Harcourt, chanting slogans and singing solidarity songs in favor of the emergency measures.
This demonstration follows an earlier protest on April 11, during which women rallied against the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the emergency declaration issued by President Bola Tinubu.
The emergency rule, announced on March 18, was prompted by a prolonged political crisis in the oil-rich state. In addition to suspending Governor Fubara, President Tinubu also suspended Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu and the entire State House of Assembly for an initial period of six months.
Ibok-Ete Ibas, a retired naval officer, was immediately appointed as the interim head of the state’s administration.
