Since his appointment in November 2024, Dr. Auwal Mustapha Imam, the Director General of the Nigerian Institute of Leather and Science Technology (NILEST), has been instrumental in transforming the institute into a world-class center for leather and science technology. His strategic initiatives focus on institutional partnerships, regional expansion, and comprehensive educational programs aimed at bolstering Nigeria's economic and skills development.
Strategic Partnerships and Collaborations
Understanding the importance of collaboration, Dr. Imam has prioritised establishing partnerships with both local and international institutions. These alliances are designed to enhance research capabilities, facilitate knowledge exchange, and provide students with exposure to global best practices in leather technology and applied sciences. Such collaborations not only elevate the academic standards of NILEST but also ensure that its curriculum remains relevant to industry needs, thereby producing graduates who are well-equipped for the workforce.
Regional Expansion and Upgrades
In a bid to decentralize operations and bring educational resources closer to various communities, Dr. Imam has overseen the upgrading of state institutes into regional headquarters. A notable example is the elevation of the Maiduguri Extension Centre to the status of North East Regional Centre. This upgrade, announced during a visit to Borno State Governor Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, led to the appointment of Dr. Usman Ali Busuguma as the regional manager. Dr. Busuguma, an expert in colour and polymer chemistry, brings a wealth of experience to the role, ensuring that the center contributes effectively to skills acquisition and socioeconomic development in the region. In addition, the Sokoto Extension Centre of the Nigerian Institute of Leather and Science Technology (NILEST) has been upgraded to the Northwest Regional Centre, a move that promises to boost skill acquisition and leather technology development in the region. The announcement was made on January 24, 2025, by NILEST's Director General, Dr. Auwal Mustapha Imam, during his visit to Governor Ahmed Aliyu at the Government House in Sokoto State. As part of this development, Dr. Imam also appointed Malam Aliyu Garba Kilgore, an indigene of Sokoto State, as the Regional Manager for the new centre.
Educational and Economic Impact
Dr. Imam's vision extends to aligning NILEST's programs with national economic goals. By introducing specialised courses and degree programs in partnership with relevant ministries and agencies, the institute aims to produce a skilled workforce tailored to the needs of Nigeria's leather and science industries. This approach not only enhances the employability of graduates but also positions them as potential employers, fostering entrepreneurship and innovation. By equipping students with both technical skills and business acumen, NILEST graduates are empowered to establish their own enterprises, thereby contributing to job creation and reducing unemployment rates in the country.
Commitment to Staff and Student Welfare
Recognising that a supportive environment is crucial for academic excellence, Dr. Imam has pledged to enhance staff welfare and create conducive teaching and learning conditions. His open-door policy encourages input from all stakeholders, fostering a culture of inclusivity and continuous improvement. By prioritising the well-being of both staff and students, NILEST ensures a motivated community dedicated to achieving the institute's mission of driving research and national development. Through these strategic initiatives, Dr. Auwal Mustapha Imam is not only reshaping NILEST into a premier institution for leather and science technology but also significantly contributing to Nigeria's educational advancement and economic growth.
