The Management of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria has refuted a media report alleging that the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adamu Ahmed, inherited 300 untreated mails upon assuming office.

In a press statement issued on Sunday, the university described the report, published by Education Monitor on Thursday, April 30, 2025, and authored by Adamu Isah Waziri, as "misleading" and "mischievous."

The article, titled “ABU 14th VC Prof Adamu Takes Over Mantle of Leadership, Inherits 300 Untreated Mails,” was said to have misrepresented the actual events of the handover ceremony between the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kabiru Bala, and his successor.

"The caption of the story was not only misleading but also mischievous, as the title of the story did not in any way reflect what the Vice-Chancellor had said in his speech at the occasion," the statement signed by Ahmadu A. Ishaq, Senior Assistant Registrar, Public Affairs Directorate, read.

The university clarified that Professor Ahmed "stepped into the office with no pending files to attend to except new ones upon assumption of office," stressing that "he met a clear table and so the issue of 'inheriting 300 untreated files' was not true."

According to the statement, the transition process had begun two months before the formal handover date and involved both Prof. Bala and Prof. Ahmed jointly addressing all outstanding matters.

"All pending matters had been attended to by Prof Kabiru Bala even before his exit... The handover was only a formal and/or ceremonial matter," the university affirmed.

The statement further quoted the new Vice-Chancellor as expressing appreciation for the smooth transition and acknowledging the support of his predecessor.

"He also acknowledged with immense satisfaction the inheritance of a very strong and supportive team, consisting of three Deputy Vice-Chancellors and Principal Officers to work with," it added.

The university urged the public and media outlets to verify facts before publication and avoid sensationalism that could mislead readers or tarnish reputations.
