The factional lawmakers of the Zamfara State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Hon. Bashar Aliyu Gummi, have reaffirmed their commitment to the legislative duties mandated by the constitution and pledged to remain undeterred by what they described as political intimidation from the state government.
In a statement signed by Hon. Aliyu Ango Kagara, Member representing Talata Mafara South Constituency, the group accused the Dauda Lawal-led administration of using judicial instruments to stifle opposition and undermine due process.
“No amount of intimidation from the state government, including the use of politically compromised courts or legal officers, can derail our focused leadership,” Hon. Kagara stated.
The group alleged that some of its members were arbitrarily suspended for over a year by the faction of the Assembly led by Hon. Bilyaminu Moriki, without adherence to constitutional provisions. Petitions, they said, have been submitted to relevant security agencies and concerned stakeholders at both state and national levels.
They further claimed possession of evidence, including recorded plans of physical attacks against them and their families, allegedly orchestrated by individuals close to the governor. These incidents, according to the statement, have been reported to security agencies.
The lawmakers also criticized what they described as a "politically motivated" court order issued by Justice Halima Jaafar Mikaila, who allegedly granted an arrest order against them without specifying the basis for such action.
“One of the dates on the court order even reflects the year 2024, which demonstrates the haphazard manner in which the order was processed,” the statement noted. “Justice Mikaila failed to indicate the authority responsible for enforcing the arrest, raising questions about the legitimacy of the process.”
Despite the ongoing legal battle at the Court of Appeal in Sokoto and attempts at dialogue by former leaders of the Assembly, the lawmakers decried the state's decision to pursue parallel legal actions aimed at criminalizing their political stance.
They reaffirmed their unwavering respect for the rule of law and pledged to continue serving their constituents, insisting that they would not be silenced or deterred by threats or political maneuvers.
“Our position remains clear: all arms of government must operate within the confines of the law,” the statement concluded.
