The Zamfara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has condemned the recent arrest order issued by Chief Magistrate I, Halima Jaafar Mikaila, against nine elected members of the state House of Assembly, describing the move as unconstitutional and politically motivated.
In a statement signed by the APC Publicity Secretary in the state, Yusuf Idris Gusau, the party accused the state government of weaponizing the judiciary to silence lawmakers performing their constitutional duties.
“We at the Zamfara APC find it deeply disturbing and embarrassing that the machinery of the judiciary is being used by the state government to attack duly elected lawmakers,” the statement read. “These legislators are only fulfilling their legislative responsibilities and pointing out governance lapses.”
The APC noted that despite a pending case before the Court of Appeal in Sokoto and a petition submitted to national security authorities—including the Inspector General of Police, the Director-General of the DSS, the National Security Adviser, and the National Assembly—the Magistrate Court still proceeded to issue an arrest order without any formal charges or summons.
The party called on Governor Dauda Lawal to immediately halt what it described as harassment and intimidation of the lawmakers and to seek dialogue as a means of resolving the political crisis rocking the state legislature.
“The APC will continue to uphold the rule of law and will resist attempts to politicize the judiciary or use it against the interests of the public,” the statement continued. “We view these actions as a witch-hunt against lawmakers who have dared to speak out about the worsening security conditions in their constituencies.”
The party further urged the affected lawmakers to file a formal petition against Magistrate Mikaila before the Judicial Service Commission, arguing that the court order lacked legal merit and was clearly influenced by political considerations.
“This must serve as a warning to judicial officers not to allow themselves to be used as instruments of political persecution,” the APC concluded.
