Members of the Kawara community, located on the outskirts of Birnin Kebbi, the Kebbi State capital, have called on Governor Nasir Idris to intervene in what they describe as a deliberate attempt at land grabbing linked to an ongoing road construction project.

The community expressed concern that a top official of the Kebbi State Ministry of Lands allegedly instructed the contractor handling the road project to divert its original route, thereby enabling unlawful acquisition of community land under the guise of development.

Speaking to journalists on Friday, community spokesperson Bello Muhammad Kawara said the road—which originates from the Sani Abacha Bypass in Birnin Kebbi—was designed to connect nine agrarian and economically viable villages: Kawara, Kardi, Gwazon Fulani, Gwazon Zabarma, Unguwar Maifada, Bango Fulani, and Randali.

"For a very long time, our people have sought an access road to traverse these villages which have high agricultural and economic potentials," said Kawara. “Unfortunately, a top official of the Kebbi Ministry of Lands has ordered the contractor to change the direction of the project. This off-course diversion creates an opportunity for land grabbing to satisfy personal aggrandizement.”

The road project, awarded by the Federal Government, spans 1.2 kilometers and is currently under construction. However, the alleged interference has sparked worry among residents, who fear that continued meddling could escalate into conflict and undermine the intended development goals.

The community appealed to Governor Idris to step in promptly and investigate the matter. “We appeal to Governor Nasir Idris for his intervention to save the communities from unnecessary hardship,” Kawara pleaded.

Despite their grievances, the Kawara community reaffirmed their support for both the federal and state governments. “We are law-abiding citizens, reaffirming our support and loyalty to the Federal Government under President Tinubu and to our dear Governor Nasir Idris,” Kawara added.

The people remain hopeful that the governor will act swiftly to prevent further complications and ensure the road project fulfills its original purpose of connecting and uplifting their communities.
