As part of activities marking the second anniversary of Governor Dauda Lawal’s administration, the wife of the Zamfara State Governor, Hajiya Huriyya Lawal, has empowered 1,018 women to start or expand their small businesses.
The beneficiaries, drawn from the 14 Local Government Areas of the state, each received a starter pack based on their chosen trade and a cash grant of ₦20,000.
The initiative targeted women engaged in various small- and medium-scale enterprises, including the production of local juices, traditional dishes, and vegetable trading.
While distributing the items, the First Lady said the empowerment programme was aimed at restoring hope to vulnerable communities and enhancing their economic capacity to improve livelihoods across the state.
“The goal is to give you the opportunity to become self-reliant and contribute your quota to growth, development, and nation-building,” she said.
She urged the beneficiaries to see the support as more than just a gift, but as a seed to nurture.
“Treat this not merely as a gift. It is a seed—nurture it, let it grow your business. Hold it with pride and a sense of responsibility,” she advised.
“Our hope is that this initiative will uplift your businesses and make you individuals we can be proud of—not just in Zamfara, but across the country,” she added.
Gracing the occasion, Governor Dauda Lawal said women's empowerment remains a key component of his administration’s economic agenda aimed at fostering growth and development in the state.
He noted that over a decade of insecurity in the region had rendered many women widows, leaving them with the burden of raising orphans and struggling to meet their daily needs.
Governor Lawal commended the initiative, describing it as a meaningful step toward strengthening women-led small and medium-sized enterprises.
He pledged his administration’s continued support for women empowerment programmes across the state.
