In a solemn response to the tragic loss of 22 Kano athletes in a fatal auto crash, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has declared Monday, June 2, 2025, as a public holiday across Kano State. The declaration is aimed at sympathising with the bereaved families and honouring the memory of the deceased.

The unfortunate incident occurred along the Kano–Zaria expressway as the victims, mostly young athletes, were returning from the just-concluded National Sports Festival, where they represented the state in various competitions.

In a statement issued by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Governor Yusuf expressed his deep sorrow over the loss, describing it as "a dark moment for the entire state."

“It is with a deeply saddened heart that I received the tragic news of the unfortunate incident which claimed the lives of 22 innocent citizens and left several others injured,” the Governor stated.

“On behalf of the government and the good people of Kano State, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. We mourn with you and share in your grief,” he added.

The Governor, who is currently in Saudi Arabia for the 2025 Hajj operations, has directed that the state observe the holiday to allow citizens to pray and extend sympathy to the affected families.

He further called on Imams and the entire Muslim community within and outside Kano State to offer prayers for the repose of the souls of the deceased and for comfort to their families.

Governor Yusuf also assured the public that necessary measures are being taken to support both the families of the deceased and those who sustained injuries.

The victims included athletes, coaches, and officials who had proudly represented Kano in the national sports gathering. The mass casualty has plunged the state into mourning, with tributes pouring in from across the sporting community and beyond.

The Governor's declaration of a public holiday reflects the depth of the loss and the state’s commitment to standing with the families during this difficult time.
