The death toll from the devastating flood that ravaged Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State has risen to 153, following the recovery of two additional bodies on Sunday.
The Niger State Government confirmed the latest development in an official statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Usman.
The tragic incident, which occurred on Thursday, May 29, 2025, caused widespread destruction, submerging homes and washing away properties worth millions of naira. Initial rescue and recovery operations had retrieved 151 bodies, all of whom have since been buried.
Search efforts resumed over the weekend, leading to the discovery of two more corpses on Sunday, June 1, 2025.
"The government expresses its deepest condolences to the affected families and prays for the souls of the departed to rest in peace," the statement read.
Emergency response teams and local volunteers continue to comb the affected areas for possible survivors or further recoveries. The state government has also pledged to support displaced families and begin immediate assessment for relief and rehabilitation.
The Mokwa flood stands as one of the deadliest natural disasters in the state's recent history.
