…Says reckless statements threaten national unity, democracy
By Khalid Idris Doya
A former gubernatorial aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bauchi State, Alhaji Muhammad Sani Alamin, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately sack Bayo Onanuga and caution his media aides against issuing inflammatory remarks capable of heating up the polity.
Alamin made the call in a rejoinder sent to the President and made available to journalists in Bauchi, in reaction to a controversial statement from the Presidency alleging that opposition parties are plotting to overthrow Tinubu’s administration before the 2027 general election.
Describing the claim as “reckless and malicious,” Alamin warned that such accusations may be a deliberate ploy to suppress dissent and intimidate legitimate political opposition.
Onanuga had posted on X (formerly Twitter) that “haters of Nigeria’s progress are banding together to overthrow an administration that has been the most focused, most transformative in our history."
In response, Alamin condemned the post, saying it could signal an emerging campaign of repression against political opponents.
"The President must resist the temptation to cry wolf where there is none. It only betrays panic and undermines his democratic credentials," he said.
He accused Onanuga of stirring unnecessary political tension through baseless allegations, and questioned the sincerity of those currently posturing as defenders of democracy.
"This time, he accuses the opposition of plotting to topple the government. But where was Bayo when the real provocation began? When Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, as APC National Chairman, stepped into Gombe, the heart of the Northeast and birthplace of Vice President Kashim Shettima, to declare Tinubu as the sole APC candidate for 2027? Without consultation, without regional unity, and without even acknowledging the Vice President, a son of the soil. Was that not reckless?” he queried.
Alamin accused Onanuga of remaining silent while key APC figures alienated the Northeast, a region that strongly supported Tinubu in the 2023 election. He credited the restraint of Northern elders for averting a major political crisis.
"Enough is enough. This is not the time for divisive rhetoric. Bayo Onanuga must be called to order or removed entirely. His words are not helping President Tinubu, they are damaging his credibility and threatening national cohesion," Al'amin noted.
Alamin insisted that opposition parties have the constitutional right to organise and strategise, and should not be labelled as enemies of the state.
"The real enemies are those who insult entire regions, ignore the people’s suffering, and then attack critics with arrogance. What Nigeria needs now is governance, not media noise. If Bayo cannot deliver truth and peace, he should resign or be sacked before it’s too late," he added.
He also urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and resist any attempt to undermine democratic freedoms. He called on the international community to monitor the political situation in Nigeria and hold the government accountable for actions that may threaten civil liberties.
