Kebbi State Governor, Comrade Dr. Nasir Idris, Kauran Gwandu, has commended the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for its plan to construct 200 housing units for disaster-affected communities in the state.
The governor gave the commendation on Friday when the Director-General of NEMA, Hajiya Zubaida Umar, paid him a courtesy visit at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi.
The DG's visit was part of the official handover and flag-off ceremony for the distribution of emergency relief materials to the Kebbi State Government, intended for victims of recent rainstorms, windstorms, and floods across several local government areas.
Expressing appreciation, Governor Idris said, "Kebbi State is well aware of NEMA’s ongoing interventions, and we are grateful to the Director-General for her commitment to duty.
"This is not because she is from Kebbi State, but because NEMA has consistently demonstrated proactive and effective disaster response. You have made us proud; please continue in that spirit."
He recalled that Kebbi State experienced a series of natural disasters last year, including windstorms, rainstorms, floods, and bridge collapses.
To mitigate the impact, he said the state government had established a committee to raise awareness—particularly in flood-prone areas—and provide guidance to residents on relocating to safer, higher ground.
Earlier, the NEMA Director-General informed the governor that the agency had finalized plans to build 200 housing units for people affected by disasters in the state.
“Kebbi State has faced significant challenges over the years, including banditry and recurrent natural disasters such as floods and windstorms," she noted.
"Despite these hardships, the resilience and determination of its people continue to inspire hope.
"The recent devastating storms and floods in Shanga, Suru, Bunza, Danko-Wasagu, Koko-Bese, and Augie Local Government Areas have displaced thousands, disrupted livelihoods, and worsened the vulnerability of already fragile communities.”
Umar emphasized that the handover and flag-off of relief materials was a demonstration of the Federal Government’s commitment under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda.
She added that the items would support ongoing efforts to rehabilitate communities affected by the disasters.
“I must commend Governor Nasir Idris and his team for their proactive and tireless efforts in disaster response and public support.
"NEMA remains committed to working with your administration to strengthen disaster management and build resilience across the state.
“As we hand over these relief items, let us remember that our efforts go beyond emergency response—we are building a safer, more resilient future for all Nigerians. Together, we will overcome these challenges and secure a brighter future for Kebbi State and the nation,” she concluded.
