A member of the House of Representatives representing Bungudu/Maru Federal Constituency, Hon. Abdulmalik Zubairu Zannan Bungudu, has commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies for the peaceful and orderly conduct of the supplementary election in the Kaura Namoda South State Assembly Constituency.
INEC had scheduled the rerun for Thursday, August 21, in five polling units across Sakajiki and Kyambarawa wards of Kaura Namoda Local Government Area, following the cancellation of over 3,000 votes during last Saturday's by-election.
According to reports, election materials and INEC officials arrived at the polling units early, with voting commencing between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. The exercise recorded a large turnout of voters and was marked by adequate security presence across all polling stations.
Hon. Zubairu, who also led the All Progressives Congress (APC) delegation at the Takasu polling unit, described the election as peaceful, credible, and a demonstration of democratic maturity.
"As you can see, our voters have been on the queue since morning, casting their votes in an orderly manner. I commend INEC staff for their professionalism and also appreciate the security agencies for the massive deployment of personnel that ensured a peaceful process," he said.
He also praised the electorate for their active participation, describing it as a reflection of growing trust in democratic institutions.
In a similar vein, a delegate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the Kasuwar-Daji polling unit, Muhammad Sanusi, applauded the smooth coordination by INEC and urged security agencies to remain vigilant throughout the exercise.
“The turnout of voters is encouraging and shows increased awareness of democratic rights,” Sanusi noted.
Also commenting, Rep. Sulaiman Abubakar Gummi, who represents Gummi/Bukkuyum Federal Constituency, said the election was conducted in a free, fair, and transparent manner.
"INEC deserves credit for the transparency and orderliness of the process. The strong voter turnout is a sign of public confidence in the system," he added.
Zonal Coordinator of Senator Abdul’aziz Yari’s constituency office, Alhaji Shaaya’u Sarkinfawa, expressed optimism about an APC victory. Speaking to journalists in Sakajiki, he commended the peaceful atmosphere and the enthusiasm of voters.
“Even in the previously cancelled units, our people have returned in large numbers to support the party. The APC remains strong on the ground,” he said.
Meanwhile, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Muhammad Gumel, deployed to oversee the rerun, assured the public of the security agencies' neutrality and professionalism throughout the electoral process.
“The police, in collaboration with other sister agencies, are monitoring all five polling units to ensure safety. We have urged our personnel to maintain discipline and uphold the integrity of the electoral process,” Gumel stated.
The security agencies deployed for the exercise included the Nigerian Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), among others.
The supplementary election is part of efforts to conclude the legislative representation of the Kaura Namoda South State Constituency after the earlier vote was declared inconclusive.
