The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has empowered 500 women across the 33 local government areas of Oyo State through her Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), in partnership with the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The beneficiaries received items including deep-chest freezers, maxi gas cookers with ovens, generators, and industrial grinding machines to support existing businesses or help them start new ones.
The empowerment programme was held at the Oyo State Government Secretariat in Agodi, Ibadan, where Senator Tinubu was represented by the wife of the state governor, Mrs. Tamunominini Makinde.
Speaking at the event, the First Lady said the initiative recognises the critical role of women in national development. She noted that the programme aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises inclusive economic growth and sustainable development, particularly with a focus on women’s empowerment.
“Empowering women is not only a step toward gender equality but a key driver of economic and social progress,” she said. “This initiative supports the realisation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG 5 (Gender Equality) and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth).”
She added that the empowerment programme aims to provide long-term economic support, reduce poverty, and foster self-reliance among Nigerian women.
The event drew the attendance of government officials, community leaders, and women's groups from across the state.
