Venezuela: Civilians, Officials Killed in US Attacks

Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodríguez stated that the government is unaware of the whereabouts of President Nicholas Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores, adding the US attack has cost the lives of officials, military personnel and civilians across the country.

Maduro has been captured and flown out of Venezuela after the US carried out a large scale strike on the capital city of Caracas, US President Donald Trump claimed Saturday, adding there will be “further details to follow".

Speaking by telephone to Venezuelan TV, Rodriguez called on the United States to issue "proof of life" of Maduro.

Rodriguez added she did know the whereabouts of Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, following a series of US strikes on Caracas and other cities.

Venezuela's Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello said on Saturday his country "will overcome" the US military attack.

Cabello, considered one of the most powerful men in Caracas, told a local television broadcast that "at the end of these attacks, we will overcome", adding that "this is not our first battle against our people... we have managed to survive under all circumstances."

He stated that the US only “partially” achieved what it set out to do by attacking Venezuela.

“What they tried to achieve with the bombs and missiles they launched, they only partially succeeded in doing. And I say partially because they expected the people to perhaps run wildly, cowardly. No,” he said defiantly, while speaking to security forces.

He insisted the country remains calm and knows what it must do moving forward.

Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López also said the US attack on Saturday impacted urban areas across Venezuela with missiles and rockets fired from American combat helicopters.

He added Venezuela is currently gathering information about the number of people killed and wounded.

Lopez insisted the country would resist the presence of foreign troops in the country.

“This invasion represents the greatest outrage the country has suffered,” he continued.

Venezuela on Saturday demanded an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council to discuss the US attacks on the country.

"Faced with the criminal aggression committed by the US government against our homeland, we have requested an urgent meeting of the United Nations Security Council, which is responsible for upholding international law," Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil wrote on the Telegram messaging platform.

Venezuela’s government has condemned the “very serious grave military aggression” by the US against multiple parts of the country.

Caracas has announced it will also file complaints before the UN Security Council, the UN Secretary-General, and other international bodies, demanding the condemnation of the US.
