Foreign Minister Yván Gil stated that Nicolás Maduro remains the country’s president, after being asked about the state of governance after the country's leader was captured by the United States.
“The Constitution is clear: the elected president – the constitutional president is President Nicolás Maduro Moros, whose physical presence in Venezuela must be restored immediately by the United States government because this is a violation,” he said on state TV.
Gil insisted that the Constitution remains strong and continues to govern the country.
“The intuitions are working at full capacity. Our armed forces are deployed, the police also deployed, the public also deployed. Everything is active in defense of the homeland and sovereignty. Have faith that this is a strong state. The Constitution is solid and robust that permits face this and any situation as we have showed throughout history,” he added.
On Saturday, the US military conducted raids on Venezuela. President Donald Trump later announced that Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, had been captured and flown out of the country. Caracas has denounced the strikes as “grave military aggression".
