The National Chairman of Jama’atu Izalatul Bidi’a Wa Iqamatus Sunnah (JIBWIS), Sheikh Abdullahi Bala Lau, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to reconsider its plan to conduct the 2027 general elections during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.
Speaking to journalists in Zaria on Sunday, February 15, 2026, Bala Lau described the proposed timing as unfair, noting that it could place undue hardship on Muslim voters observing the fast.
He argued that holding elections during Ramadan may make it difficult for many Muslims to fully participate in the electoral process due to the physical and spiritual demands of the fasting period.
According to him, INEC should review the election timetable to ensure inclusivity and enable all citizens to exercise their civic rights without unnecessary constraints.
Beyond the election issue, the cleric called on traders to reduce the prices of essential commodities during Ramadan, stressing the need for compassion and mutual support.
He also appealed to wealthy individuals to support the less privileged during the fasting period, noting that acts of charity not only ease hardship but also attract divine blessings.
