As is his tradition each year ahead of the holy month of Ramadan, the leader of the Islamic movement, Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky, has once again distributed food items to the needy in Zaria and other towns across the country.
The distribution began prior to the commencement
of Ramadan and will continue until Thursday, the 2nd of Ramadan 1447 AH,
corresponding to February 19, 2026. According to the organisers, the exercise
starts daily at about 8:00 a.m. to ensure that assistance reaches deserving
beneficiaries in an orderly and efficient manner. The distribution is expected
to continue throughout the Ramadan period.
Items being distributed include millet, maize,
rice, sugar and other essential food supplies commonly consumed during the
fasting period.
Speaking to journalists, Sheikh Zakzaky’s
relative, Malam Badamasi Yaqoub, described the initiative as a long-standing
tradition. “The distribution of food items is something we have consistently
done. It has been 10 years since we resumed after the 2015 Zaria incident, but
the Sheikh insisted that the initiative should not be discontinued. That is why
it has continued,” he said.
He added that Sheikh Zakzaky has been
providing food assistance to the needy every Ramadan for more than 20 years.
Malam Badamasi emphasised that the support is
not limited to the Sheikh’s followers, noting that the majority of
beneficiaries are not his disciples. “The assistance is directed at the
vulnerable and the less privileged. In addition, families of martyrs receive
support every year. The purpose of this distribution is to ease the burden of
fasting. Anyone who provides food assistance during Ramadan earns immense
spiritual reward,” he stated.
He further explained that many people seek
assistance, including those not previously listed among regular beneficiaries,
but efforts are made to support them as resources permit.
Some
of the beneficiaries, both men and women, expressed gratitude for the
consistent support they have received over the years. They also offered prayers
for Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky, asking God to grant him good health and long life.
