The Niger State House of Assembly has urged the Executive Arm of Government to direct and support all relevant law enforcement and security agencies to intensify investigations and expedite action towards identifying, apprehending, and prosecuting those responsible for the stabbing to death of Comrade Jafar Abdullahi Dabawu in Minna, Niger State.
This resolution followed a Motion of Urgent Public Importance moved by Hon. Dogari Daje, Member representing Munya Constituency, during plenary on Tuesday, 9th June, 2026.The sitting was presided over by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Barr. Abdulmalik Mohammed Sarkin-Daji.
Presenting the motion before the House, Hon. Daje stated that every citizen of Nigeria is entitled to the protection of life and dignity, while government at all levels has a constitutional responsibility to safeguard lives and property against criminal attacks and violent acts.
He informed the House that in the early hours of Thursday, 21st May, 2026, Comrade Jafar Abdullahi Dabawu, a respected community leader, social advocate, and former President of the Minna Emirate Youth Association, was brutally attacked by suspected hoodlums who reportedly gained unlawful access into his residence in Maitumbi, Minna.
According to reports, the deceased noticed that the entrance door leading to his sitting room had been left open and proceeded to investigate the situation. While doing so, he was allegedly confronted by one of the intruders who had concealed himself within the premises.
One of the suspects reportedly stabbed him in the chest and inflicted further injuries on his face, causing severe bodily harm that eventually led to his death despite efforts to save his life after he was rushed to the General Hospital, Minna, for urgent medical attention.
Hon. Daje further noted that the Niger State Police Command responded promptly to the incident, confirmed it as a homicide case, and commenced investigations aimed at identifying, apprehending, and prosecuting those responsible for the gruesome act.
He described the late Comrade Jafar Abdullahi Dabawu as a widely respected figure across Niger State who dedicated his life to youth development, community service, peace building, and the advancement of societal causes. He served meritoriously as President of the Minna Emirate Youth Association and held several other positions of responsibility within the community.
The lawmaker lamented that the untimely death of the deceased has created deep grief, shock, and concern among members of his family, friends, associates, youth organizations, community leaders, and the general public across Niger State.
He expressed concern that several weeks after the unfortunate incident, those responsible for the crime have not been publicly identified, apprehended, or brought before a court of competent jurisdiction. According to him, failure to swiftly arrest and prosecute the suspects could embolden criminal elements, weaken public confidence in the criminal justice system, and undermine the deterrent effect of law enforcement efforts.
Hon. Daje also observed that the increasing cases of violent crimes, home invasions, and attacks on innocent citizens pose a serious threat to public safety, peaceful coexistence, and the collective aspiration of government to create a secure environment for all residents of Niger State.
He stressed that where perpetrators of violent crimes are not promptly brought to justice, citizens may become fearful about their personal safety and lose confidence in the institutions responsible for maintaining law and order.
The lawmaker further stated that the tragic killing of Comrade Jafar Abdullahi Dabawu has deprived his family of a loving husband and father, deprived the youth constituency of a mentor and role model, and deprived Niger State of a patriotic citizen whose contributions to community development and youth empowerment positively impacted many lives.
He emphasized that justice delayed in the matter may amount to justice denied and could further worsen the pain and trauma already being experienced by the bereaved family and the wider community.
*THE HOUSE RESOLVED TO*
1. Urge the Executive Arm of Government to direct and support all relevant law enforcement and security agencies operating within the State to intensify investigations and expedite action towards identifying, apprehending, and prosecuting all persons connected with the stabbing and death of Comrade Jafar Abdullahi Dabawu.
2. Urge the Executive Arm of Government to facilitate effective collaboration among the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and other relevant security agencies to ensure the successful conclusion of investigations and prosecution of the perpetrators.
3. Encourage the Executive Arm of Government to strengthen intelligence gathering mechanisms, surveillance systems, community policing initiatives, and crime prevention strategies across Minna metropolis and other parts of the State to prevent the recurrence of similar criminal acts.
4. Commiserate with the family of the late Comrade Jafar Abdullahi Dabawu, the Minna Emirate Youth Association, the Minna Emirate Council, and the entire people of Niger State over the painful and unfortunate loss.
5. Mandate the House Committee on Security to interface with the Commissioner of Police, Niger State Command, and other relevant security agencies, monitor the progress of investigations, and report back to the House within a stipulated period with recommendations for further legislative intervention where necessary.
At the conclusion of deliberations, the House unanimously referred the motion to the House Standing Committee on Security for further engagement with relevant agencies and directed that its resolutions be transmitted to the Executive Arm of Government for necessary action.
*Assembly Begins Debate on Key Financial Reform Bills*
In another development, the Niger State House of Assembly commenced debate on the Second Reading of a Bill for a Law to Provide for the Establishment of the Niger State Assets Management Agency and Other Connected Matters.
Following deliberations and contributions by Honourable Members, the Bill was referred to the House Committee on Finance for further legislative scrutiny and directed to report back to the House within four (4) weeks.
Similarly, the House also commenced debate on the Second Reading of a Bill for a Law to Amend the Niger State Fiscal Responsibility Commission Law, 2010, and Other Connected Matters.
After extensive deliberations, the Bill was equally referred to the House Standing Committee on Finance for further legislative action and to report back to the House within four (4) weeks.
